The Process of Therapy

Psychotherapy is a process in which we will discuss many different issues, events, experiences, and memories for the purpose of creating positive change so that you can experience your life more fully and with more satisfaction.  It provides an opportunity to better and more deeply understand yourself and your relationship with others, to consider new perspectives on and solutions to problems or difficulties you may be experiencing, and to find new resources to support healthy change in your life. Psychotherapy is a journey of mutual effort that focuses on continuing emotional, cognitive, and psychological development.

Progress and success may vary depending upon the particular problems or issues being addressed, the resources of the individuals involved, as well as many other factors.  During the therapeutic process, many clients find that they feel worse before they feel better.  This is generally a normal course of events.  Personal growth and change may be easy and swift at times, but may also be slow and frustrating.  We invite you to discuss any questions or concerns about the therapeutic process in general or with your therapist in particular during any session; this can be an important part of your growth and reaching your goals.
