Sexual Addiction Treatment

Sexual addiction involves obsessive thinking and compulsive behavior related to erotic sexuality. It comes in two forms: contemporary sexual addiction where behavior is restricted to pornography-related behaviors, and classical sexual addiction where behavior goes beyond pornography-related behaviors, including affairs, strip clubs, anonymous sex, paying for sex, and more.

Addiction is highly correlated with unresolved trauma, as addicts use acting out to escape and distract them from painful memories, boredom, anxiety, depression, and disappointments. Individuals who have a history of being sexually abused and those whose families of origin were impacted by sexual problems are more likely to develop problematic sexual behaviors, including addiction. However, there are many individuals with no significant trauma, who also get caught up in problematic and addictive behaviors.

A positive response to one of the following six questions indicates that additional assessment with a qualified professional is highly recommended; two or more positive responses is considered to indicate a likely sexual addiction:

  1. Preoccupation. Do you often find yourself preoccupied with sexual thoughts?

  2. Ashamed. Do you hide some of your sexual behavior from others?

  3. Treatment. Have you ever sought help, treatment, and/or therapy because your sexual behavior was causing you problems and/or you did not like your sexual behavior?

  4. Hurt. Has anyone been hurt (emotionally or otherwise) because of your sexual behavior?

  5. Out of Control. Do you feel controlled by your sexual desire?

  6. Sad. When you have sex, do you feel depressed afterwards?
